Historic Map - Granville, NY - 1886
Description
Reproduction panoramic map of Granville, New York, drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1886. The town of Granville is in Washington County along the Granville River. In 1886 the river was referred to as the Mettawee River, but it has also been called the Pawlet. Granville has enjoyed rich deposits of colored slate since it was discovered here in the 1850's. Founded in 1780, Granville was primarily a sheep and cattle raising community when the valuable slate was discovered right under their feet. With slate in purple, red, black and sea-green, Granville's quarries are still productive today.
The map from 1886 shows railway route and includes clearly labeled street names.
