Historic Map - Greeley, CO - 1882
Description
View of Greeley, Weld County, C.O., 1882 / drawn & published by J. J. Stoner.
This bird’s-eye view print of Greeley, Colorado was drawn by J. J. Stoner and published by Beck & Pauli, Lithographers Co. in 1882. Greeley was a junction site for travelers along the Overland Trail until the late 1860's when newspaperman Nathan C. Meeker purchased the land and began a utopian colony there.
The community, north of the South Platte River; at an elevation of 4,658 feet above sea level, was later named after newspaper editor Horace Greeley.
The county seat of Weld County prospered in its early years with agricultural and horticultural interests.
The fashionable Oasis Hotel at the corner of Madison Avenue and Maple Street was the town pride in 1882. The three-story brick structure featured a wrap-around porch, wrap-around balcony and a stone pediment top.
The panoramic map shows labeled streets, buildings and railroad route. Featured is an inset illustration of the Oasis Hotel.
