Description

View of Greenfield, Franklin County, M.A., 1877 / drawn & published by O. H. Bailey & Co.

This bird’s-eye view print of Greenfield, Massachusetts was drawn and published by O. H. Bailey & Co. in 1877. Greenfield was settled in the late 1600's at the confluence of the Deerfield, Green and Connecticut Rivers. Its high bank location, next to the Pocumtuck Mountain Range, afforded enough water-power to establish mills and factories.

Greenfield prospered as a result of the various manufactures that emerged along the waterways, becoming an important trade center of the area. Green River Works, a fine cutlery factory, was established in 1834.

The illustration includes labeled streets, buildings, bridges, waterways and railroad routes. Inset illustrations of Greenfield Tool Company, Franklin County National Bank and Mansion House appear in the lower margin.
