Historic Map - Gunnison, CO - 1882
Description
View of Gunnison, Gunnison County, C.O., 1882 / drawn & published by J. J. Stoner.
This panoramic print of Gunnison, Colorado was drawn by J. J. Stoner and published by Beck & Pauli, Lithographers Co. in 1882. Gunnison was established in the mid-1800's as railroads were in search of easy passes across the Rocky Mountains.
The town served as a terminus for the Denver & South Park Railroad and later, a stop along the Denver & Rio Grande line. Gunnison sits at an elevation of 7,700 feet above sea level. In those early railroad years the building and maintaining of the numerous rail tunnels and snow-sheds above the timberline were important projects for the citizens of Gunnison.
Gunnison was named after railroad surveyor John W. Gunnison. The town was made the county seat in 1877, when the county was formed.
A noted resident of Gunnison was Wyatt Earp, who ran a lively faro game at a local saloon during this era.
The map published in 1882 indicates Gunnison’s population to be 4,500. It includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad routes. Labeled peaks are seen in the distance. Featured are inset illustrations of the following:
