Reproduction aero view map of Hammonton, New Jersey drawn and published by Hughes & Bailey in 1926.
Hammonton was settled in 1812 when William Coffin built a sawmill at the area's lake. Later Coffin along with Jonathan Haines established a glass factory nearby. Upon Coffin's death the factory was run by his sons, John Hammond Coffin and Edward Winslow Coffin. When Edward Winslow moved to the west and founded the Winslow Township, the community around the factories came to be called Hammondton after the remaining brother John Hammond. Later the "d" was dropped. The area's sandy soil is ideal for growing blueberries and Hammonton is known as the "Blueberry Capital of the World".
