Description
View of Hingham, Plymouth County, M.A., 1885 / drawn & published by A. F. Poole.
This bird’s-eye view print of Hingham, Massachusetts was drawn and published by A. F. Poole, Geo. H. Walker & Co. in 1885. Hingham was settled in the 1600's southeast of Boston.
Hingham Bay had deep water portage enabling many port activities. Ship building was a major industry at Hingham and ferries full of New Englanders regularly visited.
In the 1880's, Hingham began new community improvements, including the tree-lined avenues illustrated here, that were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.
The illustration includes labeled roads, buildings, bridges and railroad route. Port activities are displayed in the foreground including steamer “Andrew”. There is an inset illustration of South Hingham.
