Description

View of Hinsdale, Cheshire County, N.H., 1886 / drawn & published by L. R. Burleigh.

This panoramic print of Hinsdale, New Hampshire was drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh, C. H. Vogt & Son Lith. in 1886. Hinsdale was incorporated in 1753 along the Connecticut River by Ebenezer Hinsdale, who had been a chaplain and officer at Fort Dummer, near Brattleboro, VT, during the Dummer War.

Hinsdale established Fort Hinsdale, a trading post and grist mill south of Brattleboro along the river in 1742. Hostile attacks by Indians on the fort and those who settled around it were frequent in the early years.

In the 1800's, the area’s Connecticut and Ashuelot rivers powered mills and shops at Hinsdale. An early woolen mill begun by Caleb Todd was acquired by Rufus S. Frost and New Hampshire governor William Haile. The company was a large producer of Cashmerettes and flannels. C. J. Amindon & Son, successors of Bishop & Boynton, made the same types of goods. The Brightwood Mills, operated by George C. Fish, and a company owned by G. & G. A. Robertson, where large producers of manila paper. Newhall & Stebbins manufactured mowing machines and the Jennings & Griffin Manufacturing Company produced knives, cutlery and precision hand tools.

The map includes labeled roads, buildings, bridges, waterways and railroad route.
