Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Hoboken, Hudson County, New Jersey, drawn and published by O. H. Bailey and A. Ward in 1881. Hoboken's transportation center dominates this map published 35 years after Hoboken introduced organized baseball to America. In 1846 the New York Knickerbocker Club played the New York Nine at Elysian Fields. This Hoboken site remained a popular baseball park until the mid-1870's when the area was developed for housing. The Stevens Institute of Technology was founded at Castle Point in 1870, and remains today a popular private university of the sciences. Hoboken was incorporated as a township in 1849 and as a city in 1855.
This map shows Hoboken's buildings, clearly labeled street names, shipping traffic and railway routes of 1881.
