Historic Map - Homestead, PA - 1902
Description
View of Homestead, Allegheny County, P.A., 1902 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.
This panoramic print of Homestead, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1902. Homestead was originally an agricultural and mill community along the Monongahela River, which had first been settled by Europeans in the late 1700's. Chartered in 1880, Homestead gained its first iron mill in 1881.
The original iron mill was purchased in 1882 by steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie. The Carnegie Library opened its doors in here in 1888. Homestead was tossed into turmoil in 1892 as the “Battle of Homestead” surrounded the Carnegie Steel Mill. Worker’s unions were being forced to sign contracts for lower wages and an armed battle ensued between disgruntled workers and hundreds of Pinkerton agents that the company had brought in. The gun battle lasted a full day with eleven people dead and many injured. The National Guard was called in to restore peace. The worker’s unions suffered a great setback as a result. By 1902, nearly 7,000 workers worked in the mills of Homestead.
The map from 1902 includes Homestead’s labeled streets, buildings, bridges and railroad lines.
