Historic Map - Houlton, ME - 1894
Description
The county seat of Aroostook County, Houlton is located on the United States - Canadian border. The Meduxnekeag River runs through the town. While still part of Massachusetts, the town of Houlton was first settled by Aaron Putnam and Joseph Houlton, who brought their families to the area in 1807. The town became part of the state of Maine in 1820 and officially incorporated as a town in 1831, named for one of the original settlers, Joseph Houlton.
Hancock Barracks was established here in 1828 to protect the United States position as border disputes with Britain continued after the American Revolutionary War. Two hundred troops were garrisoned at Hancock Barracks, which was the furthest northeast Army installation in the United States. The Aroostook War of 1838-39 brought three companies of the 1st Artillery Regiment to Hancock Barracks. General Winfield Scott negotiated a truce in 1839 and Secretary of State Daniel Webster settled the dispute in diplomatic meetings with British officials, resulting in the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842. The army sold the barracks in 1873, after abandoning the facility in 1847.
