Historic Map - Ilion, NY - 1881
Description
Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Ilion, New York, drawn and published by H. H. Rowley & Co. in 1881. Ilion is a village in Herkimer County on the banks of Steeles Creek near where it reaches the Mohawk River. Several mills were established along the creek following the American Revolution and the village began to prosper. In 1816, Eliphalet Remington produced his first gun and would soon found the Remington Arms Co. in Ilion. The guns became so popular Remington began to mass-produce them. One style in particular was in such demand, it became known as the gun that "won the west". In 1847 the company began making pistols and they too began to attract interest, especially from the U. S. Government, who soon added the arm to its government issue weaponry. Many other governments adopted the Remington weapons and in the early 1870's the French government purchased 155,000 rifles that were all manufactured in Ilion and shipped to France. The company also produced sewing machines and typewriters and was of major importance to the economy of the village.
