Description

View of Ipswich, Essex County, M.A., 1893 / drawn & published by Geo. E. Norris.

This bird’s-eye view print of Ipswich, Massachusetts was drawn and published by Geo. E. Norris in 1893. Ipswich is a coastal town northeast of Boston that was settled in the 1630's.

The waters of the Ipswich River, at that point, afforded water-power for mills and factories. Textile mills and light manufactures began to appear in the early 1800's. By the 1890's, the Ipswich Hosiery Mills, begun by Amos A. Lawrence, was considered America’s largest stocking mill.

Farming, fishing and ship building were also early industries of Ipswich.
