Historic Map - Johnstown, NY - 1888
Description
Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Johnstown, New York, published by Lucien Burleigh in 1888. Named by founder Sir William Johnson, a celebrated officer with the British Army, Johnstown is the county seat for Fulton County. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born and raised in Johnstown and studied at the Johnstown Academy before partnering with Susan B. Anthony and serving as president of the National Woman Suffrage Association. Johnstown is noteworthy as one of the "Glove Cities" of New York; the other being nearby Gloversville. The area's abundance of forest bark enabled tanneries to produce high quality leathers which were cut to form in factories and sewn by women at several home workshops. When the sewing machine was developed the women began making the gloves in factories. Johnstown's glove industry employed thousands and also led to the development of many supporting businesses.
This map from 1888 shows buildings, clearly labeled street names and railway route.
