This bird’s-eye view print of Lawrence, Kansas was drawn and published by Albert Ruger, Merchants Lith. in 1869. Lawrence was settled in the 1850's between the Kansas and Wakarusa rivers.
Lawrence was named county seat of government of Douglas County when the county was organized in 1857.
After Kansas earned statehood, the University of Kansas was established at Lawrence. The institution opened it doors to its initial 55 students in 1866 on forty acres of land donated by philanthropist and town namesake Amos Adams Lawrence.
The illustration shows labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad route. Inset illustrations feature the Public School and Kansas State University.
