This bird’s-eye view print of Leavenworth, Kansas was drawn and published by Albert Ruger, Chicago Lith. in 1869. Leavenworth was established on the west banks of the Missouri River in 1854.
Leavenworth, located just south of Fort Leavenworth, was the first city in Kansas to incorporate.
In the years surrounding the American Civil War, Leavenworth was a safe-haven stop for runaway slaves, having a whole series of hidden underground vaults.
The University of Saint Mary was founded at Leavenworth as Saint Mary College in 1859.
Leavenworth is now home to a number of detention centers including the Kansas State Penitentiary.
The illustration shows labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad routes. Inset illustrations include the Catholic Cathedral, the Public School, Fort Leavenworth and the First Baptist Church.
