Reproduction panorama map of Lima, Ohio, drawn and published by Smith & Buckingham in 1892. In 1831, the Ohio legislature forced the Shawnee Indians from the area that had been established for them in the Treaty of Greenville and founded Lima. Lima's first school and courthouse were dedicated the following year. In the 1850's, the train linked the town to neighboring communities and Lima increased its industrialization. A countywide contaminated water supply slowed growth for a period until Lima started their clean water system in 1886. Oil was discovered here in the 1880's and Lima had the largest oil field in the country at the time. Benjamin Faurot opened his fabulous opera house in Lima in 1882.
