This bird’s-eye view print of Lincoln, Nebraska was drawn by Henry Wellge and published by American Publishing Co. in 1889. Lincoln is Nebraska’s state capital and county seat of government for Lancaster County. Originally called Lancaster, its name was changed after Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. The town, which prospered with agriculture and the valuable salt reserves nearby, began to boom after the passage of the Homestead Act.
The Nebraska State Penitentiary building was constructed in the 1870’s using magnesia limestone walls, quarried at nearby Saltillo. The State Hospital was built in the same era. The Lincoln Coal Mining Company was seen by many as a prospect for the future. Lincoln is shown here two years after its entire town council was incarcerated in their attempt to oust a corrupt police judge.
The map published in 1889 shows Lincoln’s valuable railroad lines, labeled streets, buildings and vicinity. There are featured inset illustrations of the following:
• Christian University.
• State Insane Asylum.
• West Lincoln.
• South End of the City, from Corner A and Tenth Streets.
