Description
This bird’s-eye view print of Little Rock, Arkansas was drawn by Henry Wellge & Co. and published by Beck & Pauli Lith. Co. in 1887. Little Rock remained a wilderness town until Arkansas became a territory, at which time the capital was moved there. Arkansas gained statehood in 1836, with Little Rock as its capital.
During the American Civil War, Little Rock was occupied by the northern army.
Douglas MacArthur was born at the U. S. Armory Barracks in 1880. By 1887, Little Rock was a major commercial and business center, as well as an active railroad hub.
The map published in 1887 includes labeled streets, bridges, buildings and railroad route. Riverboat activity is portrayed in the foreground. It features an inset illustration of the Southern Oil Mills.
