Known as East Livermore until 1930, the site of today’s Livermore Falls was originally settled in 1786, as a part of a land grant to veterans of the British conflict in Jamaica. Named after one of the first British settlers, Deacon Elijah Livermore, the Adroscoggin River divided the settlement between Oxford County on the west and Kennebec County on the east. East Livermore was set off and incorporated in 1844.
The 14 foot falls supplied water power, allowing East Livermore to develop as a mill town after the arrival of the Androscoggin Railroad in 1852. Many of the early sawmills and pulp mills appear on this map from 1889, including the Umbagog Pulp Co., built by 19th century capitalist Hugh Joseph Chisholm, who was to become the first president of International Paper nine years after this map was published, bringing together 30 pulp mills from across the United States and Canada.
