Historic Map - Lonsdale, RI - 1888
Description
This birds-eye view print of Lonsdale, Rhode Island was drawn and published by O. H. Bailey & Co. in 1888. Lonsdale was established in the 1800's to maintain and house workers of the cotton mills that were erected near that portion of the Blackstone River. The Lonsdale Company was one of the worlds largest textile manufacturers of the 1880s.
The local curiosity Floating Island was a conglomeration of living grasses, shrubs and trees that floated between Scotts and Cranberry Ponds. The island grew to be a hazard, eventually pinching the fresh water supply to the cotton mills bleaching system and was destroyed.
