Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Lowville, New York, published by Lucien Burleigh in 1885. The town of Lowville is in the foothills of the Adirondacks, located on Mill Creek just west of the Black River. Settled in the late 1700's and named after early landowner Nicholas Low, Lowville was deemed county seat for Lewis County in 1864. In 1885 the community was a major manufacturing center of carriages and sleighs as well as producing fine wood furniture and high grade cheese.
