The citizens of Machiasport erected a liberty pole in the settlement when a merchant sloop with a British schooner escort on May 9, 1775, brought news of the events at Lexington and Concord. Captain Ichabod Jones of Boston had been granted permission to deliver his goods to the port on condition that he return with a cargo of lumber. The British commander of the armed English schooner Margaretta ordered that the pole be removed, under threat of firing on the town. The townspeople refused and planned to capture the British commander, Lieutenant Moore. Moore managed to escape capture and fled down the river in his schooner. A group of Machiasport men, including Benjamin Foster, Jeremiah O’Brien and his five brothers took possession of the merchant sloop and sailed it down river in pursuit of the Margaretta. The successful capture of the British schooner, now known as “The Battle of Machias” gave Machias the distinction as the site of the first naval battle of the American Revolution.
