Historic Map - Malone, NY - 1886
Description
Reproduction panoramic map focusing on Malone, New York, published by Lucien Burleigh in 1886. Malone is located in Franklin County along the Salmon River. Originally settled in the early 1800's, the village was sacked during the War of 1812 by the British. Malone's fairgrounds were put to use as Camp Franklin while forces readied for battle in America's Civil War, recruiting forces for the 98th Regiment. In 1866, the Irish-American group known as the Fenians gathered in Malone before launching one of their failed attacks on Canada.
The town prospered as a dairy farming community that was well known for its growing of hops and potatoes. The Ogdensburgh Railroad operated a station and machine shops in Malone. Many of Malone's early buildings were constructed of the attractive sandstone quarried from nearby Potsdam Sandstone Quarry.
This map from 1886 shows Malone's buildings, clearly labeled street names and railway route.
