Historic Map - Maplewood, NJ - 1910
Description
Bird's-eye-view of Maplewood, N.J. Drawn by H. S. Wyllie.
Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Maplewood, Essex County, New Jersey, looking west, drawn and published by H. S. Wyllie in 1910. The farming and light industrial community of Maplewood gained attention in this era as improvements to the railroad began reducing the commuting time between New York and Newark. Maplewood benefited as a new bedroom community. In the years before the town's Memorial Park grounds were designed by the Olmsted Brothers, famous landscape architects, Maplewood was a popular get-a-way known for its many outdoor activities and its healthy mineral spring water. The Rahway River flows through Maplewood.
The map shows Maplewood one year after Pierson's Mill converted from water to electric power. The mill's pond would later be drained and the area was redesigned and formed into today's Memorial Park. The image shows buildings, clearly labeled streets, and railway route of 1910.
