Description
This colorful panoramic print of Mattoon, Illinois was drawn by J. W. Smith and published by Shober & Carqueville in 1884. Mattoon was founded in the mid-1800's as news of a major railroad crossing at that location was announced.
Mattoon soon became a hub for the railroads, attracting manufacturers and business of all sorts.
The fertile soil of the prairie regions that surrounded Mattoon afforded many agricultural and horticultural interests.
The map includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad routes. It features inset illustrations of the following:
