Description

Mechanicville, N.Y. Published & drawn by L. R. Burleigh. Beck & Pauli, litho.

Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Mechanicville, New York, published by Burleigh Litho. Co. around 1880. Mechanicville is a city in Saratoga County along the western banks of the Hudson River. The community was named after the many skilled craftsmen that had established mills, shops and factories in the area. Mechanicville prospered greatly with the arrival in 1823 of the Champlain Canal and twelve years later with the completion of the Saratoga and Renselaer Railway. The community grew rapidly with these new transportation methods and Mechanicville became home to several textile mills as well as being an important paper making center.

One of the town's most famous citizens was Col. Elmer Ellsworth who was noted as the first casualty of the American Civil War. Ellsworth had been clearing the streets of Washington with his men, when he was gunned down by innkeeper James Jackson after removing a Confederate flag that Jackson had flown from the Marshall House Inn. President Lincoln had Ellsworth's body brought to the White House where it lay in state in the East Room before being laid to rest in Mechanicville.

This panoramic map from the 1880's shows railroad route, buildings and clearly labeled street names.
