This bird’s-eye view print of Meredith, New Hampshire was drawn and published by George E. Norris, Burleigh Lith. in 1889. Meredith was settled, amid the out-flowing waters of Lake Waukewan into Meredith Bay and Lake Winnipesaukee, in the 1760's. Farmers of the region grew cereal grain and vegetables. Meredith was well known for it abundant apple orchards in the early days.
The community began attracting vacationers in the 1840's with the addition of a branch of the Boston, Concord & Montreal Railroad. Steamers also brought in tourists, but were unreliable because of periodic low-water restrictions at some of the waterways.
The outlet waters of Lake Waukewan provided water-power for a number of industries at Meredith during the 1800's.
A curious goose-egg shaped relic was dug up, from six-feet below the surface, at this point in 1872. It had a conical-shaped hole and mysterious carvings that were considered more primitive in craftsmanship than gems produced in ancient Europe, but much more advanced than any found in North America. The silicious-sandstone relic has stumped the scientific world ever since its discovery.
The map includes labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad route.
