Description

Bird's eye view of Merrill, Wis. county seat Lincoln Co. 1883. Drawn by H. Wellge. Beck & Pauli, lithographers.

Bird's-eye view map of Merrill, Wisconsin, drawn by H. Wellge in 1883, reprint. The town of Merrill was named to honor S. S. Merrill, the general manager of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad in 1881, just two years before this map was published. A trading post had been established here in 1843, when the place was called Jenny Bull Falls, or just Jenny.

An essay appearing in the "Merrill Herald" on June 23, 1914, written by Miss Ida E. Seger explains the naming of Jenny Bull Falls and recalls the early days of the town:

"As early as 1841, the sturdy loggers and trappers had made their way up the rivers, naming the interesting places as they went. At Mosinee the falls were called Big Bull falls because of the roaring sound they made. At Wausau they were called Little Bull falls. When the trappers arrived this far one adventurous and romantic trapper gallantly bestowed the name of his lady love upon the falls, calling them Jenny Bull falls. The city was at first called Jenny Bull, but later just Jenny. The Indians called it Hilboot Shewand. The fur companies sent their agents here and the Indians eagerly exchanged skins and furs for knives, weapons, blankets and large iron kettles which they used for cooking maple syrup. In 1841, 800 Indians encamped in the maple grove a short distance from the city and there cooked kettle after kettle of delicious maple syrup."
