Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Middletown, New York, published by American Oleograph Co. in 1874. In 1874, Middletown was a village in eastern Orange County, New York. It was settled in the late 1700's in the foothills of the Shawangunk Mountains along the Walkill River. The village attracted several industries to the area including shoe manufacturers and furniture producers after the arrival of the Erie Railroad and New York, Ontario and Western Railway. Middletown would grow to be officially designated a city fourteen years after this map was published. Today Middletown is almost entirely bordered by the township of Walkill.
