Historic Map - Mifflin (formerly Patterson), PA - 1895
Description
This panoramic print of Mifflin, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1895. The town now known as Mifflin once served as a ferry town at the banks of the Juniata River. Great prospects emerged in the late 1840s as the land was purchased in order to establish a railroad center for the Pennsylvania Railroad. A town was planned and named Patterson. The railroad company built railroad shops and a roundhouse, and established a railroad station. The decision to move the company to Altoona in the 1860s left Patterson with only a station, as the shops and roundhouse were all removed to Lewistown and most of the land sold. Pattersons name was changed to Mifflin in the early 1900's.
The map from 1895 shows the bridge across the Juniata River to Mifflintown and buildings, with clearly labeled streets and railroad route.
