Historic Map - Millerton, NY - 1887
Description
Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Millerton, New York, drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1887. The village of Millerton was settled in the 1850s and incorporated in 1875 in Dutchess County. It was named after civil engineer Sidney Miller, who was a railroad builder and was largely responsible for the railroad's appearance in the area. Millerton prospered as a commercial center after the arrival of the railways. The Millerton Hotel was built in 1852 by Alexander Trowbridge, Alexander Holley and James Winchell. George Greathead's Central Hotel was built in 1865. The Brick Block Hotel was erected by James Conlan in 1872. The nearby town of Irondale was almost entirely dominated by the Millerton Iron Company during this era.
