Description
This illustrated print of New Salem, Illinois was drawn by Arthur L. Brown and published by R. J. Onstott. New Salem is the location where Abraham Lincoln first lived as a young man. Here he lived independently from his family as a boatman, storekeeper, surveyor, postmaster and rail splitter before being elected to the Illinois General Assembly.
New Salem was rebuilt as it had been in Lincoln’s day in the 1930's and remains a tourist destination to this day.
