Description

The city of New York.

This reproduction panorama view map of New York was published by Currier & Ives in 1892. It provides a look at New York and vicinity six years before the consolidation of the five boroughs. In 1867, the West Side and Yonkers Elevated Railway was constructed along Greenwich Street and Ninth Avenue.

Ellis Island opened for immigration on January 1, 1892, the same year that this map was published. Near New Jersey in the upper New York Bay, the immigration processing facility was named in honor of Samuel Ellis, who acquired the island in 1785.

Four years before this map's publishing the "Great Blizzard of '88" paralyzed New York City with over 40 inches of snowfall and sustained 45 mile per hour winds produced 50 foot snowdrifts. Railroads were shut down and New Yorkers were unable to get around for up to a week.

Composer Antonin Dvorak accepted the directorship of the new National Conservatory of Music in America at Irving Place, moving into a residence at 327 East 17th Street in 1892. Dvorak wrote two great masterpieces while there, the "New World Symphony" and his Cello Concerto.

This beautifully colored bird's-eye view map from Currier & Ives shows streets, buildings, and shipping traffic.
