Historic Map - Newburgh, NY - 1900
Description
Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Newburgh, New York, published by T. J. Hughes around 1900. Newburgh is a city in Orange County on the west bank of the Hudson River. Henry Hudson had stopped here during his 1609 expedition and noted that the area was "a pleasant place to build a town". George Washington and his Continental Army camped at Newburgh from March of 1782 until late in 1783 and Washington took up headquarters at the late John Hasbrouck's estate. Some senior officers while at the camp, began a conspiracy to overthrow the Republic, but Washington was able to deflate their actions with his famous "Newburgh Address", which outlined principles which the new government of the United States would subsequently establish. The Continental Army was disbanded here in 1783 and many soldiers and their families settled in Newburgh. With its proximity to the Hudson River, Newburgh was able to establish itself as a manufacturing center following the American Civil War, producing everything from cottons, woolens, silks, paper, bricks and soap, to automobiles and carburetors. The first Edison power plant was established in Newburgh, making it America's first city to be electrically powered.
This panoramic illustrated map shows clearly labeled street names, buildings, railway routes and shipping traffic.
