Description

View of Newport, Perry County, P.A., 1895 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This aero-view map of Newport, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1895. Newport was incorporated as a borough in 1840. The community located on the west bank of the Juniata River was at the point of a ferry boat landing early on. A marble works began in the area in 1804. Newport, then called Reiders Ferry, achieved status when the Pennsylvania Canal system was established in 1829. This molded Newport into a shipping center for grain and lumber. The first tannery in Newport was built in 1837. The Pennsylvania Railroad arrived in 1849 with a track right along Third Street. Newport gained a number of saw and flour mills during the era and in 1851, when Newport was connected by bridge with the agricultural areas on the east side of the river, the additional trade led to even greater prosperity.

The map from 1895 includes labeled streets, bridges, buildings and railroad route. It features an inset illustration of "East Newport looking down river".
