Historic Map - Newville, PA - 1903
Description
View of Newville, Cumberland County, P.A., 1903 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler.
This panoramic print of Newville, Pennsylvania was drawn and published by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler in 1903. When the Big Spring Presbyterian congregation organized in the 1730's they built their first church here. In 1790, the church erected a larger church of stone. Newville was laid out surrounding the church by the congregation and lots were sold. This new church was designed with tiered levels each containing straight-back pews marked with a user’s price according to the pew’s viewpoint. The church was redone in the 1840's with new windows, choir and pipe organ platform and a cupola. In the 1880's, the church once again was improved by adding a recess, vestibules, gothic designed wood of chestnut and walnut everywhere, crimson carpeting, green velour drapes and a new church tower with belfry. Painted frescos on the interior stucco walls were done by the ladies of the congregation.
