Description
View of Northfield, Rice County, M.N., 1869 / drawn & published by A. Ruger.
This panoramic print of Northfield, Minnesota was drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Ruger and Stoner in 1869. Northfield was founded in the 1850's on the banks of the Cannon River by lawyer and statesman John Wesley North. North purchased property and established Northfield along the river in 1855. That same year he built a dam and saw mill.
Northfield prospered as an agricultural and educational community in its early years.
Mr. North and his family left Northfield in 1861 to help survey the newly formed Nevada Territory and its valuable minerals before moving on and founding Riverside, California.
Northfield College was organized in 1866 by the Minnesota Conference of Congregational Churches. Five years later its name was changed to its current one, Carleton College, after a major donor.
