Historic Map - Norwalk, CT - 1899
Description
A historic map print reproduction of Norwalk, South Norwalk and East Norwalk, CT, published by Landis & Hughes in 1899. A city with a rich colonial history, first chartered as a town in 1651. The town of Norwalk was nearly destroyed during the American Revolution when British forces arrived on July 10th, 1779, burning all but six houses. The traditional American song "Yankee Doodle" is considered to have been inspired by a regiment of soldiers from Norwalk, who arrived at Fort Crailo, NY, during the French and Indian War with only chicken feathers for uniform adornment. The British soldiers mocked them for their rag-tag appearance and a British surgeon, Dr. Richard Shuckburgh, put new words to the tune of a popular song called "Lucy Locket". The phrase, "stuck a feather in his cap and called it macaroni" refers to the chicken feathers, with "macaroni" being the London slang of the day for a foppish dandy.
At the time this map was published, Norwalk had the largest fleet of steam-powered oyster boats in the world.
