Historic Map - Norwalk, OH - 1870
Description
Reproduction panorama map of Norwalk, Ohio looking northeast drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Ruger & Stoner in 1870. Norwalk is located 10 miles south of Lake Erie on land the government reserved for Connecticut victims of the American Revolution who had had their homes and cities destroyed. Norwalk was settled in the early 1800s by Platt Benedict and his family from Danbury, Connecticut. Many others came from New England bringing their specific architectural building designs to Ohio. Huron's county seat was moved here in 1818. Platt Benedict took special care in the outward impression of his town and in 1830 he had the beautiful maple trees planted along Main Street. Norwalk's central location brought growth in business and distribution. Benedict, who was named the town's first mayor, died just 4 years before this maps publication at the age of 91.
