Historic Map - Oak Bluffs (Cottage City), MA - 1890
Description
This bird’s-eye view print of Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts was drawn and published by Robert A Welcke in 1890. Oak Bluffs was settled by Europeans in the mid-1600's on the banks of Nantucket Sound. The town was known as Cottage City until 1907 when the name Oak Bluffs was adopted.
In the late 1800's, Oak Bluffs was a popular New England get-a-way with many expensive summer homes and ornate hotels. Coney Island’s Flying Horses Carousel was moved to Oak Bluffs in 1884, where it still operates today.
The map shows buildings, labeled streets and railroad route.
