Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Olean, New York, drawn by H. Brosius and published by J. J. Stoner in 1882. Olean is in Cattaraugus County along the Alleghany River. It became a major lumber town in the early 1800's and an oil town and regional railroad center in the late 1800's. St. Bonaventure University was founded nearby in 1858 by the Franciscan Brothers. In 1882, Olean's maintained newspapers were the "Olean Daily Times", "Sunday Mirror", "Sunday Herald" and the "Olean Weekly Times". Olean would reach city status eleven years after this map's publishing.
