Historic Map - Peaks Island - Portland Harbor, ME - 1886
Description
Located on Casco Bay, Peaks Island is a neighborhood community of the city of Portland, Maine. Considered the “Coney Island of Maine”, the island was used for recreation and entertainment, featuring some of the finest hotels, theatres and other amusements. The town’s skating rink and roller coaster are referenced on the map.
A conflict between Native Americans and the English, known as King Philip’s War, was considered the greatest calamity to fall upon the Puritans in the 17th Century, with nearly half of the towns destroyed and many killed. The Native American leader, Metacomet was called “King Philip” by the British. While the conflict elsewhere in New England ended with King Philip’s death at the hands of Puritan rangers in 1676, fighting in Maine continued until the signing of a treaty at Casco Bay in April 1678.
Most of the hotels that appear on the map were later destroyed by fires. The only hotel among those listed in 1886 that is still standing is The Avenue, which today serves as condominium housing.
