Historic Map - Pearl River, NY - 1924
Description
Reproduction aero-view map of Pearl River, New York, drawn by Rene Cinquin and published by Hughes & Bailey in 1924. Pearl River is a hamlet in Rockland County that was founded on the abandoned flood plains of the Muddy Brook by Julius Braunsdorf in the 1870s. Braunsdorf was an inventor, city planner and builder, a humanitarian and businessman. He purchased the low swampy land and began planning the new community as a company town. He donated a strip of land through the center of his property to the New Jersey and New York Railroad which enabled them to extend northward, and Pearl River received a railroad stop in return. Mr. Braunsdorf built a depot and a hotel. He established the Aetna Sewing Machine Company in Pearl River and was a major employer in the area. William, John and Henry Streets were named after his three sons. In 1906, Ernest Lederle founded the 99 acre Lederle Antitoxin Laboratories and Farms in Pearl River. The company became known as "Wyeth" and now occupies a site of over 500 acres and is popularly known as Pfizer.
