Historic Map - Penacook, NH - 1887
Description
This panoramic print of Penacook, New Hampshire was drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh around 1887. Penacook was settled in the 1720's as plantation land.
Earlier it had been the location of Hannah Duston’s captivity revolt. She and a number of colonists had been captured during King William’s War and were held prisoners on an island at the mouth of the Contoocook. Hannah led the nighttime revolt, scalping of their captors, and escape, earning her the reputation as an American hero scalp-hunter.
The fast-moving waters of the Contoocook River, as it rallied to join the Merrimack, enabled mills and manufactories to be established at this location in the 1800's. Penacook was served by the Boston & Lowell Railroad.
Penacook is now considered part of Concord.
The map includes labeled roads, buildings, bridges, waterways and railroad route.
