The reproduction birds-eye view map of Philippi, West Virginia was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1897. Philippi was established in the late 1700's as a ferry town along the Tygart Valley River. Its situation at the bend of the river made for easy fording from its lowlands. Booths Ferry operated from Philippi, crossing the river and shaping the community, until the covered bridge was constructed in 1852.
On June 3, 1861, Philippi was the site of the American Civil Wars Battle of Philippi. At the onset of the Civil War, two Union forces, under the command of Colonel Benjamin Kelley and Colonel Ebenezer Dumont, marched all night from Grafton in a rainstorm to surprise the newly mustered and inexperienced Confederates stationed here. The Confederates were awakened to the Union armys muskets and quickly attempted to form a defense. The inexperienced and outnumbered Confederates broke their inept battle lines and fled southward, leaving Union forces to enjoy their first victory of the war.
One year before this maps publishing the county had a serious hydrophobia scare and the court ordered all dogs and animals bitten by dogs killed, but dog owners were also given the option to muzzle and confine their pets instead of killing them.
The map from 1897 includes clearly labeled streets, buildings, railroad route and covered bridge. and railroad lines. It notes Civil War Battle of Philippi sites:
