Description

Plainfield and North Plainfield, N.J. 1899.

Reproduction aero-view map of Plainfield and North Plainfield, New Jersey drawn and published by Landis & Hughes in 1899. The New York bedroom community of Plainfield was founded in 1847 in the Raritan Valley, with the township of North Plainfield forming in 1872.

About Plainfield, Ralph Moreton Hooker of the Plainfield Daily Press in 1895 wrote:

Perhaps the reader-gentle or otherwise-may think the people of Plainfield so enamored of their beautiful surroundings that they have issued this volume solely to perpetuate, by means of literature and art, the memory of their present joys. Such is not the case. These dwellers on the plain have so long enjoyed their Quaker heritage of peace and good-will to men, that with the unselfishness born of their environment, they proclaim unto all people-who can bring references-their willingness to share these delights-and their taxes-with others.

Many of the dwellers here, it is true, spend their days in struggle of life; but at night all is peace, and the bulls and the bears with the lambs lie down to rest. As everywhere else, occupation is more or less varied, but the chief industry of the town, according to a prominent railroad official, is going to New York And this is not an unpleasant occupation, for the trains of the Central R. R. of New Jersey are a finely equipped, and speed over the perfectly ballasted, four-tracked road-bed from Plainfield to Jersey City without a stop.

Though the distance from New York to Plainfield is 24 miles, express time is but 45 minutes. This includes a delightful sail of 10 minutes on the North River, with its attendant exhilaration of atmosphere and glorius panorama of land and water.

The Central R. R. of New Jersey is remarkable for cleanliness of its cars-only hard coal being burned-and the desirable class of people who are its patrons. The more exclusively inclined, however, ride in palatial club cars, where the short trip can be most enjoyably spent. The promptness to schedule is also a feature of this road, which commends itself to business men.

Near the railroad station on North Avenue, the popular Hotel Granada was a four story luxury resort in the 1890's, run by George and Wallace V. Miller.

The map from 1899 includes clearly labeled streets and railroad line.
