Historic Map - Port Townsend, WA - 1878
Description
The city of Port Townsend, Washington was established in 1851, at the tip of the Olympic Peninsula. It the late 1880's it was thought that it could become the largest city in the American West, due to it being a well known seaport. However, in the 1990's the city was bypassed by the Northern Pacific Railroad, resulting in a rapid decline in population. As a result, many of the original structures of the city are still intact, and the town has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
