Historic Map - Portsmouth, NH - 1877
Description
View of Portsmouth, Rockingham County, N.H., 1877 / drawn & published by A. Ruger.
This bird’s-eye view print of Portsmouth, New Hampshire was drawn and published by Albert Ruger, D. Bremner & Co. Lith. in 1877. Portsmouth was settled in the 1630's along the Piscataqua River in New Hampshire’s coastal region. Portsmouth has been a long-time shipping transportation center with ship-building facilities.
The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was established in 1800 on a group of islands in the Piscataqua. The USS Constitution was moved to the shipyard in 1857 to be retrofitted as a training ship. Here, classrooms were added to the ship’s spar and gun deck, and armaments reduced in number. Upon completion of the overhaul, in 1860, the Constitution was re-classed a 2nd rate ship and re-commissioned to the Naval Academy at Annapolis.
The map includes labeled roads, buildings, wharves, waterways and railroad route.
