Historic Map - Potsdam, NY - 1885
Description
This reproduction bird's-eye view of Potsdam, New York was published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1885. The town of Potsdam lies in St. Lawrence County, New York, along the banks of the Raquette River. Potsdam received its name after surveyor's discovered a bed of red sandstone nearby that resembled the red sandstone from Potsdam, Germany. Several buildings in Potsdam were constructed of the stone in the early days. The St. Lawrence Academy was founded in Potsdam in 1816 and is now known as State University of New York at Potsdam. In the mid-1800's, Potsdam's Dr. Henry Hewitt was responsible for the appropriation of $10,000.00 from the government to make certain improvements of Raquette River and make it easier to float lumber downstream to town for milling. This proved to be quite profitable for Potsdam.
This panoramic view map of Potsdam from 1885 shows labeled streets, buildings and railroad line.
