Description

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / drawn by H.H. Bailey.

This reproduction panoramic view of Poughkeepsie, New York was drawn by Howard Heston Bailey and published by G. W. Lewis in 1874. Popularly known as "The Queen City of the Hudson", Poughkeepsie is county seat for Dutchess County and was New York's second capital. In 1788 the Ratification Convention for New York gathered at Poughkeepsie's courthouse on Market Street to debate and ratify the United States Constitution. Members included John Jay, Alexander Hamilton and George Clinton, and the outcome brought New York into the United States of America as the eleventh of the original thirteen colonies to band together. Poughkeepsie had been a whale rendering village in early times and later a manufacturing center for several breweries and paper mills. Being a port town with great natural beauty, Poughkeepsie attracted many affluent New Yorkers to its streets. Weekend homes and resorts were built on a grand scale. Five years before this map's publishing the Collingwood Opera House was erected in downtown Poughkeepsie. The famous opera house, designed by J. A. Wood, featured a double-stage dome and could seat over 900. Mark Twain, Sarah Bernhardt and John Barrymore would perform here, as well as others. Now known as Bardavon Opera House, it is the oldest continuously operated entertainment establishment in New York state.

This bird's-eye view map of Poughkeepsie from 1874 features inset illustration of Vassar College and shows labeled streets, buildings and the railroad line.
